Experimental Typography: High Fire
The concept was to create eight unified figures in 3D that could be transformed into vector images in order to make custom typography. "High fire" is a term used in ceramics to describe a type of clay. A "cone" is also a ceramics term; it is used as a temperature measuring device in the kiln that fires the clay. I created these eight letters by making hollow clay forms in the shape of traffic cones by using the pinching method. Each letter consists of multiple parts attached together, ranging from two parts (letter "I") to nine parts (letter "H"). Once the clay was leather hard, I added the line detail and color. Then, the clay was put in the kiln to fire and I took photos of the individual letters in order to vectorize them. Once they were vectorized, they were put on a template so I could make a stencil that would allow me to print the image on the apron with a silk screen.
